Rule 1 – Be realistic!
Before you start planning you need to sit down together and discuss your vision for your wedding. Think about what sort of venue you want, if you want a theme, what sort of timeframe you’re looking at and every other detail to do with your wedding. It’s important you keep your budget in mind – there’s no point getting yourselves into a huge amount of debt that you’ll end up paying off for years to come. You should also divide some of the planning between the two of you, and from there you can start working on a plan.
Rule 2 – Make a plan
While plans don’t always… well go to plan, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t create a planning strategy. You should include a timescale with goals so you can keep on track with your wedding planning. Although it might take you longer than expected to find the perfect dress, at least you know what else you should be working on. If you put a plan in place you’re less likely to discover you’ve forgotten to organize something important a week before the wedding!
Rule 3 – Don’t get into debt
You’ve been saving for your wedding for some time, but you might feel the urge to spend more than you budgeted for on part of your wedding. Don’t do it! You will either have to cut corners somewhere else or borrow money to pay for your dream wedding. You’re going to need to write out a budget so you can keep track of your spending and to make sure you don’t spend like you just won the lottery (unless you actually have hit the jackpot!) Divide your spending between the different areas and while it’s OK for the figures to change, you should stick to the grand total.
Rule 4 – Stay positive!
There will always be people who will try to put a downer on your day and planning. There are people who think that you shouldn’t be excited about your wedding day, and there are people who just don’t like to see others being happy. Don’t waste your time with these people. If you can you should step back from them and don’t let their negativity ruin your buzz. You will also face setbacks in your planning process, but don’t let that dampen your enthusiasm for your wedding. So you can’t afford a bouquet of Casablanca lilies – you can get something just as beautiful that is within your budget. Keep your wedding in perspective and focus on all the good and beautiful things that are ahead of you!
Rule 5 – Let it go
You don’t have the ‘perfect’ body – so what? What does the word perfect even mean! When you see celebrity wedding photographs always remember that they have a team of people who make them look good, and there might even be a bit of photoshopping going on. Don’t let the way people treat you define you. The person you are about to marry loves you just the way you are so you should too. There are plenty of people who are ready to say something nasty or bring you down, so you don’t need to join them by putting yourself down. Let it go – you are the perfect bride and the perfect you!
